Giving back to the community through volunteering

At DLG our vision is to create a world where insurance is personal, inclusive and a force for good. Making a positive contribution to the society around us is important to the business, our people and all our key stakeholders.

A key part our sustainability strategy is employee volunteering and through our One Day volunteering programme, Direct Line Group employees are encouraged to get involved and support their local communities. Volunteering can take many forms including working with a local charity, sports or community-based organisations or by providing mentoring and career guidance through our Community Fund programme.

Riah Sattar from DLG Legal Services organised for 28 colleagues to volunteer at Foal Farm Animal Rescue Centre in Kent across two days this year. The team spent time clearing out the piglets’ area, painting the goats caravan, table, and fence, as well as cutting back the bushes from around the cows’ field so that the farm could reinstate a fence to keep the cows safe. The team also presented Foal Farm Animal Rescue Centre with a cheque for £1000 which they had raised through Direct Line Group’s Community Cashback Award.

Riah Sattar, a Solicitor at DLG Legal Services said,

“We had an amazing couple of days, supporting a great cause while having lots of fun, laughter, and amazing teamwork. I would recommend volunteering for a charity as it gives you a chance to meet new people and make new friends, and helps you develop existing skills and learn new ones, and it is hugely rewarding.

“Through volunteering I was not only able to give back to my local community, but both days proved to be great team building days, where colleagues that rarely get the chance to truly interact and spend time with others based in different teams or locations were brought together in a single place to work on a shared goal.”

Community Cashback Awards are available to all Direct Line Employees, supporting the cause and community groups they feel passionate about. Employees can apply once a year for an Award which is donated to a charity or organisation that is registered with the Charities Commission in the UK.
